Apocalypse Event (Warzone)

Mar 31, 2023

The next day, we woke with a few of our items a bit wet inside the tent due to a bit of downpour overnight. Nevertheless, we got kitted up and had breakfast before queuing for chrono. There was a fairly long queue so it took a little while to get through this which meant to us missing our photoshoot with Samwise Photography. When walking out of chrono we bumped into Akastaten and Evoathena and had a short catch up. It was nice to finally meet them in person. We went and spoke to Samwise after chrono and he said we can rebook for after the games which we did. He even said we can include Brocko.

We set off into the game area where we had a safety brief. There were a few rules that I hadn’t encountered before (I’ve not yet played at Warzone/District 23). One I really liked that if there were reports of cheating from a player, they would get given a white armband to wear so players are aware of who is cheating and if they continue, they’d then be asked to leave. I thought this was a good rule to enforce and especially with there being many players at the event (almost 300).

We then had a lunch break where we had a burger from the catering van which was very nice. We saw that Stef (Callsign Wheels) had his stall there, so we had a catch up with him as well as being unsuccessful on his tombola. Stu (Link Stu) was also there so we had a fab catch up. It kept raining on and off from here which was a bit annoying knowing some more things inside our tent may get wet.

The afternoon of play arrived, and it was the same objectives, but we swapped respawns. This meant we had to find new ways to attack and could see that their respawn was a fair walk in comparison to the hill at the other respawn. We were able to be more successful in attacking the castle and had a couple more options on where to flank.

On this weekend, I had booked on to the Apocalypse Theme Park event, which was located at the abandoned theme park, Camelot. It was the first time I had done an event like this, so I was really looking forward to it and meeting lots of people from social media.

After a 5-hour drive, we arrived, and we set up the tent in the car park so meant it was hard standing. We were made aware of this prior to going so was expected. We didn’t have the correct pegs to drill into the ground, so we just set up our tent without pegging it down. We went and said hello to some familiar faces such as Eddie from Lonestar Tactical and Kingsley (Kilo Two Niner). Callsign Brocko was happy to be out of the car and socialising!

We said a quick hello to Leah (Callsign Chaos), a fellow UKAL member, who was on the opposite team and then set off to our respawns. The game for the day was domination. There were boxes scattered around the site and we had to ensure that the colour of our team was flashing, during this we could also collect resources such as crates of food, fuel etc to gather more points for our team to be added up at the end.

We started where the entrance was for the site and to get to the main feature (the castle) there was a steep hill. This could’ve made me very tired if I kept getting killed so I knew I had to be extra sneaky. There were no medics throughout the day but this wasn’t a problem. Most of the firefight was based around the castle but me, Kingsley and another ghillie decided to take another route which meant flanking round. This became a great spot as the enemies had no idea we were attacking from the side.

After attempting to flank and struggling due to lack of places to use my ghillie effectively, we left the game field to get ready for our photoshoot. This was when it began to rain constantly and quite hard. Samwise had never had a shoot with a dog before so we ensured Brocko was on his best behaviour by maintaining his concentration with treats! The outcome of the photos was amazing and we were more than impressed.

We headed back to the tent in the rain after finally meeting and having a catch up with Michaela (one of the head marshals) and saw that not only was the inside of tent wet, but the air mattress had also deflated. This led to us feeling the same way and although there were dog friendly hotels available, due to the late booking it was a bit much to pay when we’d have to leave at lunch time the following day to travel home. We wanted to leave after experiencing a great day, so we packed our stuff up, said goodbye to friends and headed back home.

We made this decision based on numerous factors and nothing negative in regards to the event itself or it’s running.

Overall, the event was well run and organised. From what I’d heard from other players, no one was moaning and everyone seemed to be having a good time. I’d even heard the Sunday was better than the Sunday so I’m gutted to have missed out on that experience. I can’t wait to hear about any more events that the staff of Warzone decide to run and for a first event, they did amazingly!
